POPULATION DISTRIBUTION AND URBANIZATION
Population
Distribution refers to the pattern of settlement and dispersal of population
within a country or other areas (Note: Population is not evenly spread or
distributed around the world; some areas are densely populated while others are
sparsely populated, some areas are desert while others are mountains areas).
In Nigeria more than 60% of the
populations are urban dwellers whereas the reverse is the case in Libya and
other developed societies. There is urban-rural migration all over the world;
only about 1/3 of the earth’s surface is permanently
inhabited
South Central Asia (India) and East
Asia (China) are the most populated of the world’s region whereas the least
populated areas is Australia, New Zealand etc. as at today, about four (4)
countries have the population that exceed 200million, these countries includes
India and China as stated above.
Factors that Influences Population Distribution
1. Geographic Factor: includes factors
like climatic condition of the area and the terrain, also soil nutrients (is
the soil fertile or not); there is also availability of Natural resources
2. Economic Factors
3. Social Factors: the nature of network
of relationship, are they hospitable people, friendly people etc.
4. Political Factors: political
instability (negatively influenced population)
5. Demographic Factors: these includes
(a) Fertility
(b) Mortality and
(c) Migration
The above
are the factors that make a particular area to be densely populated and some
areas to be sparsely populated.
