FACTORS FOR
THE SITTING OF INDUSTRIES
Industries are usually located in
areas which posses certain economic and social advantage that are favorable to
their establishment; it is invariably the consideration such factors as
suitable land, skilled labour, power; raw material and others which determine
the location of any major industry.
1. CLOSENESS TO RAW MATERIALS
Closeness to the sources or raw
material is one o the factors that determines the location of an industry. The
need to site an industry close to the source of raw material becomes pressing
which the raw material are bulky, heavy or perishable. Sitting an industry near
the raw materials reduces transportation costs.
2. CLOSENESS TO POWER
The source of power supplies
frequently exert a power attraction on industrial location hence industries are
sited where constant power supply is.
3. CLIMATE
Climate could be another crucial
factor that location of an industry particularly cotton, ice-cream etc. the
establishment of ice-cream industries might be promoted by the hot climate.
4. NEARNESS TO MARKETS.
An industry
is attracted to location near the market, if the market exerts a special pull
and if the raw material pull is significant. If a factory is near the market
for products, transport cost will be reduced. This explains the growth of soap,
cigarettes, cosmetics and similar industries that cater for personal and basic
requirements in our big towns and cities.
5. LABOUR COSTS
Labour is less important as an
original factor determining the location of industry because it is mobile.
Workers move to where employment is offered although this is dependent on
certain conditions. Manufacturers will be attracted to West if the real cost of
factory labour is lower than elsewhere.
6. GOVERNMENT POLICY:
Industries can be located in some
areas because of governments desire to encourage industries in depressed area
thereby creating employment opportunities and stopping the general migration of
population from rural to urban centers.
